300 Division - New Testament Studies

These courses are intended to provide a comprehensive understanding of the New Testament Scriptures. Students are equipped to do accurate exegetical work in the Greek New Testament so they may effectively communicate and apply the Scriptures in their ministries. Special emphasis is placed on the teaching, historical background, principles of interpretation, critical problems, and contemporary relevance of the New Testament.

301 New Testament Greek I
A study of the language and grammar of the Greek New Testament with focus on morphology, and parallel introduction of syntax. Coursework includes vocabulary acquisition, and translation from Greek to English. Reading aloud the Greek text is stressed. 4 hours

302 New Testament Greek II
A course designed to build on the skills established in 301. The student will complete the study of morphology and will study syntax in more detail, with an exegetical focus. Vocabulary acquisition continues. A variety of selections from the New Testament, both narrative and epistolary, will be translated. Prerequisite: 301. 4 hours

303 Principles of Greek Exegesis 
A study of exegetical principles and the application of the exegetical method to the study of the New Testament using a critical edition of the Greek text. The course deals with issues and methodology pertaining to the analysis and use of textual evidence, lexical data, morphology, syntax, and discourse structure in the process of interpretation. Vocabulary acquisition is continued and translation skills are further developed. Writing assignments dealing with analysis of the Greek text are an integral part of the course. Prerequisite: 302. 2 hours

304 Practice of Greek Exegesis
A course which requires the student to practice Greek exegesis through the preparation of a New Testament lesson/sermon text and an exegetical paper. Prerequisite: 303. 2 hours

305 Readings in Greek Literature 
An advanced reading class in various types of Greek literature including the Septuagint, New Testament, and Church Fathers. Prerequisite: 303. 2 hours

SPECIAL TOPICS IN NT STUDIES 

312 New Testament Theology 
A systematic and biblical study of the revelation of God through the religion, life, and history of early Christianity as contained within the canonical New Testament. Special attention is given to matters of the chronological development of biblical theology. Prerequisites: 105, 106, 302. 3 hours

313 New Testament Backgrounds
An orientation to the world of the New Testament in which the cultural and political world of the Ancient Near East is surveyed from the perspective of its contribution to understanding the New Testament. Includes a survey of important geographical and archaeological considerations. Prerequisite: 105 and 106. 3 hours

315 New Testament Seminar 
Topics chosen from year to year which deal with issues of New Testament content, history, introduction, and theology. Seminar will include discussion and presentation of advanced research. Prerequisites: 303, 311. 2 hours

316 Independent Study in New Testament
Independent research on some aspect of New Testament studies not specifically treated in required or elective courses. Credit is allowed proportionate to the amount of work but is not to exceed four semester hours in any one area of study. Research must evidence interaction with the Greek text. Enrollment is limited to advanced students upon consent of the professor. Prerequisite: 303. 1-4 hours

317 The Dead Sea Scrolls
This course will review the texts and major critical issues concerning the scrolls. It will concentrate on their origin, interpretation of the Old Testament, and expectation of the coming Messiah. The class is normally offered on videotape. Prerequisite: 101. 3 hours

318 Life of Christ
A course that will analyze the greatest life that was ever lived. The Gospels will serve as the primary source to compile the entire human, yet still divine, life of Christ. Prerequisite: 101. 3 hours

NEW TESTAMENT EXEGESIS 

321-335 Exegesis in the NT
Selected books or portions of the NT are studied from the Greek text. Prerequisite: 303. 1-4 hours

351 Thesis 
The student writes a scholarly thesis on a topic related to some area of New Testament studies. The thesis advisor must approve the thesis topic. Prerequisite: 593. 2 hours
